Intended Audience:

This workshop is designed for professionals who work directly with collections in the possession, custody, or control of academic institutions. It is also intended for administrators and staff responsible for developing, implementing, or overseeing institutional policies and procedures related to the care and management of NAGPRA-related collections.

Workshop Description:

During this 90 minute workshop, presenters will provide an overview of the Duty of Care requirements under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) regulations. The session will then focus on how academic institutions can translate these requirements into practical institutional policies and procedures.

Presenters will share real-world examples, highlight common challenges, and discuss strategies for responsible stewardship and compliance. Time permitting, the workshop will include facilitated discussion to allow participants to share experiences and ask questions about implementing Duty of Care practices within their institutions.
